Origins and philosophy
Personio was built in the DACH region with a very specific buyer in mind: the structured, process-driven mid-market HR manager who wants every workflow defined, every approval chain documented, and every compliance box ticked. That German engineering DNA shows up everywhere in the product. Personio is meticulous, configurable, and feels designed by people who believe HR is fundamentally about governance. For organisations that share this worldview, particularly larger SMEs in regulated industries, that level of structure is reassuring.
Factorial, by contrast, was built from a Mediterranean SaaS mindset that prioritises speed, simplicity, and a much shorter distance between "I have a problem" and "the problem is solved." The Barcelona team set out to build HR software that an office manager, a founder, or a first-time HR hire could open on a Monday morning and start using productively the same afternoon. That mindset has shaped every product decision since. Factorial leans modern, mobile-first, and opinionated in its defaults. The result is a platform that feels noticeably lighter and more enjoyable to use, without sacrificing the depth that growing companies eventually need.
